I see this mistake more often than I should, and it ends up costing business owners time, money, and peace of mind. Many people assume their website files are the most valuable digital asset they own. In reality, your domain name carries far more weight.
But once you lose your domain name, regaining control can be difficult, expensive, or even impossible.
Why Losing a Domain Is a Big Risk
Your domain name is your online identity. It’s what customers type into their browsers, what search engines rank, and what your business emails rely on. If you lose access to it, your website can go offline, emails can stop working, and your brand credibility can suffer instantly.
Unlike website files, domains are not easy to recover. If someone else owns or controls it, you may be forced to buy it back at a high price—or lose it entirely.
Never Let a Developer Buy Your Domain
This is a mistake I strongly advise against: never let a developer purchase your domain on your behalf.
When a developer registers the domain using their own account or email, you no longer have full ownership. If the working relationship ends or disagreements arise, your business could be left vulnerable or held hostage.
If a Developer Already Bought the Domain
If your domain was already purchased by a developer, you must take precautions. Ensure you have full access to the registrar account, know exactly where the domain was purchased, and confirm it’s registered using your personal or business email—not the developer’s.
If possible, transfer ownership to an account you fully control.
Best Practices for Domain Ownership
The safest option is to buy the domain yourself. Use your own email address, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), and keep the domain locked to prevent unauthorized transfers. Never share registrar login details with anyone, including developers.
Developers can manage hosting and website files if needed—just make sure you always have a complete backup.
Protect Your Digital Property
Your domain name is your digital property. Most website owners don’t realize how critical this is until it’s too late. If your business depends on being online, your domain name is everything.
Take five minutes today to check who owns your domain and where it’s registered. If you don’t have full control, fix it now. Own it. Protect it. Guard it like your business depends on it—because it does.
